EMS Receives $4.1 Million Seed Funding from Sustainable Development Technology Canada
May 31, 2021
Environmental Material Science Inc. (www.ems-inc.ca) (“EMS”) is excited to announce the receipt of $4.1 Million in seed funding from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (“SDTC”). The funding is part of SDTC’s national initiative to empower Canadian companies to develop and deploy competitive, clean technological solutions that help solve some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
The funding will be applied to key operating pilots and field demonstrations of the EMS technology suite over the next 5 years and in so doing, strategically set the foundation for a widespread launch of technologies that will fundamentally change the way contaminated soils are managed, monitored, and cleaned.
“This funding is the culmination of a 15-year research and development journey that started at a University of Saskatchewan lab and was supported by a dedicated team of people and partners who joined the journey at various points,” said Steve Siciliano, CEO, EMS Inc. “They were all connected by the common goal of creating a sustainable future. Funding of this magnitude does not just happen and a special thank you to our dedicated team and the following corporate partners who have provided invaluable support:
- Co.Labs (co-labs.ca)
- Federated Co-operatives Limited (fcl.crs)
- Rivercity Innovations (rivercityinnovations.ca)
- SaskTel (sasktel.com)
- Wave Control Systems (wavecontrol.ca)
Their commitment, belief, and unwavering support is truly appreciated. We would also like to sincerely thank the SDTC team, who have come behind the company and its mission of harnessing innovative science to change the way the world sees soil”.
Operating pilots and field demonstrations have already commenced and will run in three sequential phases that are planned for completion in the second half of 2025.
Why is there a need to relook at existing soil remediation practices?
This $170 Billion industry has seen limited innovation and continues to rely on timely & costly practices, which ironically carry a significant carbon footprint. In addition, current approaches perform assessments at static points in time limiting the ability to have real-time visibility on the status of the contaminated soil.
What EMS technology endeavors to do?
By embracing a suite of 3 inter-related technologies and the power of data analytics, EMS can evaluate the status of customer sites 24/7, 365 days a year. Our ability to directly detect hydrocarbons within the soil is a complete game changer. This unparalleled level of analysis will facilitate the optimization of the soil clean up strategy and empower stakeholders to make timely, data-driven decisions. The technology is exceptionally easy to install and is designed to be maintenance-free. This approach to soil remediation will enable significant savings in project budget, schedule, and environmental footprint.
“Remediation of soil should not be something that organizations do because they have to, it’s something they should want to do out of a sense of commitment to a sustainable future for our planet. EMS solutions make this commitment easy”, Siciliano added.
